YUMA HELPS MAKE AN “IN TONE NATION”
By Jason Irr, In Tone Nation Choir Member
On February 25th, 2017 Yuma’s own “In Tone Nation”, Gila Ridge High School’s a cappella competition choir, set foot in an auditorium in Aurora, Colorado for the Varsity Vocals International Championship of High School A Cappella which is the high school division of the competition featured in the movie “Pitch Perfect”. After a stunning performance, it was announced they would advance to the semi-finals in Flower Mound, Texas. The top performing group at this level will advance to the finals in New York City.
“I couldn’t believe it when I found out we were advancing! I’m so proud of all of us,” says member Mercedes Correa. Now that the choir has advanced, the hardest part is going to be fundraising for travel expenses, estimated at $10,000 for the 20-member choir, their director and chaperones. The group has recently started a Go Fund Me page at www.gofundme.com/hawkapellas-
“I’ve seen a lot of growth from the students as musicians and performers,” says director and arranger Timothy O’Brien. “The energy, drive, and focus has only increased with every step of the competition. You can see the passion from each student and the desire to do better. I’m so proud of what everyone has accomplished and will continue to achieve.”
This choir is ready to move forward and represent Yuma on a national level and that is why they need the help of the Yuma community so that these young artists may soar and achieve greatness in their craft. If you wish to donate, please visit their Go Fund Me page or contact Mr. O’Brien at Gila Ridge High School.
The choir will be holding a drive-through BBQ beef dinner fundraiser at Gila Ridge High School 7150 E. 24th St. on March 11 from 5-7 pm, presale tickets $10. You can also hear the choir perform at St. John Neumann Catholic Church on March 22 at 6 pm.
